Temporary Online Access Card

Get 24/7 instant access to most of our online resources. 

Restrictions: 

  • The card is valid for three months.
  • Available to ages 13 and up.
  • Due to licensing restrictions access to cloudLibrary, hoopla, Kanopy, Libby, and OverDrive is unavailable.

Physical Cards

Convert your Temporary Online Access Card to a physical card. Or start the registration process in person. We offer Full Access Cards and Limited Access Cards – card details below. To get these cards the following must visit our Accounts Desk: 

  • Cardholder (person whose name is on card)
  • For Children and Teens
    • Ages: Birth to 12 – For Full or Limited Access Cards – Your parent or legal guardian must also be present.
    • Ages 13 to under 18 – For Full Access Card – Your parent or legal guardian must also be present if you are using their photo ID/proof of address.
      •  You may apply solo if using your own photo ID/proof of address or if applying for a Limited Access Card. 

Full Access Card – Free access to everything we offer

Available to all California residents, no minimum age.

Access our full range of resources and services, including:

  • Receive 24/7 instant access to our online resources.
  • Borrow books, movies, audiobooks and items from our Library of Things.
  • Use the Library’s computers and printers.
  • Reserve a room.
  • Book a 3D printing appointment.
  • Earn a high school diploma online for free (age 17 and up).
  • Request and borrow Link+ items.

Visit our Accounts Desk, in person, with your photo ID and proof of mailing address.

Limited Access Card – all ages

Can’t show photo ID or proof of your current address? Get a Limited Access Card that lets you:

  • Borrow 2 physical items at a time.
  • Access all online resources.
  • Reserve a room.
  • Use the Library’s computers and printers.
  • Book a 3D printing appointment.

Teacher Card – for educators who work at Sunnyvale schools 

Educators can apply for a separate card to borrow items for their classrooms without having to use their personal library account. Teacher Card benefits:

  • 6 week loan period instead of 3
  • 15 holds instead of 10 

To Get This Card:

Visit the Accounts Desk in person.

Teachers must work at schools located in Sunnyvale. You will need to present a valid ID and proof of current school employment. Teacher Cards are valid from Aug. 1 to Jul. 31 of each school year.

Student Card – for middle school students

The Library supports the Sunnyvale School District in providing free Student Virtual Library Cards. It’s digital so you won’t get a physical card.

  • Access our online resources 24/7.
  • Card is valid during the school year.
  • Available to Sunnyvale School District middle school students.

To Use This Card:

  • Use your six-digit student ID number as your library barcode.
  • Your eight-digit birthdate (mmddyyyy) is your PIN.

To place holds and check out physical materials apply for a Full Access Library Card.

Replacement Library Card

Visit the Library or contact us to get a free replacement card. Do you need to use your card but can’t get to the Library? We can retrieve your library card number and reset your PIN. If using our mobile app, it can also display your barcode.

Out of State and Nonresident Card

We do not issue Out of State or Nonresident cards. All Sunnyvale Public Library cards, including Temporary Online Access cards, are limited to people residing in California.
